The Detroit Tigers are going to be well represented at the 2025 MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta after three players were elected by fans to the American League roster and ace pitcher Tarik Skubal was selected to the Midsummer Classic.
But some former Tigers players will also head to Atlanta for All-Star festivities as part of the National League roster.
Among the group are Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez, Chicago Cubs’ lefty Matthew Boyd and the San Francisco Giants’ Robbie Ray.
A first-time All-Star, Boyd is amid the best season of his 11-year major-league career. The 2013 sixth-round draft pick holds a 2.52 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings, already the most Boyd’s pitched since 2019 with the Tigers.
Following a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015, Boyd spent the better part of eight seasons as a regular starter for the Tigers.
In 162 appearances for Detroit, Boyd, 34, posted a 4.92 ERA with 825 strikeouts in nearly 850 innings of work. Although he spent one season between the Giants and Seattle Mariners in 2022 as a reliever, he would return to the Tigers in 2023 before truly reviving his career with the Cubs this season.
He will be joined by another former Tigers starter on the NL pitching staff with 33-year-old Robbie Ray.
This is the 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner’s second All-Star selection after making it in 2017 with the Diamondbacks. Ray made his MLB debut with the Tigers in 2014 and made nine appearances for the club before being traded to Arizona.
Despite dealing with recent injuries, Ray is back in full form with the Giants, posting a 2.68 ERA with 117 strikeouts through 18 starts this season.
Suárez will also make his second All-Star appearance this year, after making the NL roster in 2018 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
The Venezuelan slugger also made his MLB debut in 2014 with the Tigers, after being an international signee. He slashed .242/.316/.336 in 85 games with 13 extra-base hits and 23 RBI for Detroit.
The Tigers traded Suárez to the Reds after the season and he’s become a solid impact hitter during his 12-year career. His 304 career homer total has seen a nice boost this year, with 28 dingers in 88 games so far. Suárez is fourth in the majors in home runes this season.
Suárez was named a reserve following a second-place finish in the All-Star player voting to Manny Machado.
