PGA Tour FedEx Cup standing: Rory McIlroy surges to top after Players Championship victory

There’s a new FedEx Cup points leader on the PGA Tour this season.

With Rory McIlroy’s victory over J.J. Spaun in a Monday playoff at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, McIlroy jumped from seventh to first on the points list with 750, the largest amount available in a Tour event (the same number of points is awarded for major championships).

McIlroy took over from Sepp Straka and with the four majors coming up, he may be well on his way to a potential fourth FedEx Cup championship when all is said and done.

If anyone’s into numerology, consider this: McIlroy has won the FedEx Cup in 2016, 2019 and 2022, every three years. This year is the third year since his last.

Hmmmm.

McIlroy is the only three-time FedEx Cup champion. Tiger Woods is the only other player to have won two.

Ludvig Åberg and Hideki Matsuyama have also led the points list this season.

The race for the FedEx Cup continues this week at the Valspar Championship at the Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, where 500 points are available to the winner.
