CLEVELAND, Ohio — Kenny Pickett will have an old, familiar target on hand as he tries to win the Browns starting quarterback job.
After not selecting any receivers in the NFL draft over the weekend, the Browns on Monday agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Steelers Pro Bowl receiver Diontae Johnson, 28, who spent two seasons in Pittsburgh with Pickett.
The Browns also left open the door for their own free agent, Elijah Moore, to return.
A third-round pick of the Steelers out of Toledo in 2019, Johnson, a former second-team All-Pro, is making his way around the AFC North. He spent his first five seasons with the Steelers and then played for the Ravens last season after a stint with the Panthers.
He’s also spent time with the Texans.
In his six-year career, he’s started 75 games, catching 424 passes for 4,738 yards and 28 touchdowns.
In addition, the Browns applied the May unrestricted free agent tender to receiver Elijah Moore, who visited the Bills on Monday.
It means if Moore signs with another team, he’ll still count as part of the formula to acquire compensatory picks. If Moore remains with the Browns, which is still a possibility, the tender is worth $3.428 million for 2025.
Moore, 25, finished second on the Browns with 61 passes last season for 538 yards and one touchdown.
Johnson will join fellow Pro Bowler Jerry Jeudy and 2023 third-rounder Cedric Tillman on the receiving corps. He’ll provide another reliable weapon for whoever starts at quarterback for the Browns.
They’ll conduct a four-way competition among Pickett, Joe Flacco and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, their third- and fifth-round picks from the 2025 draft class, respectively.
