‘Brings everybody together’: Hundreds gather for 70th annual Pegasus Parade

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On a pleasant, sunny Sunday, people claim their spot along West Broadway to watch the 70th annual Pegasus Parade.

Kids were ready to have some fun and see unique cars, emergency responder vehicles, dancers and more. Local and out-of-state bands made their appearance in the parade including at least two from Pennsylvania.

Everyone gathered to celebrate the kick off of the Kentucky Derby week.

“It brings everybody together,” said parade goer, Theresa Hollingsworth, attending to see her alma mater, Simmons College of Kentucky. “Families come out and support the vendors and food trucks. And just be a part of something together as far as the parade for people just walking in the parade.”

Vendors also took advantage of the crowd, lining Broadway.

“My sister and brother, they come every year and they set up,” said Tammy Burrwell at a popup cart at 5th and Broadway. “[They] sell hotdogs and hamburgers at an affordable price.”

The crowds were filled with people waiting to see their loved ones make their way down Broadway in the parade.

“I’m out here to see my daughter,” said father, Jeremy Jones. “She’s on the Carter Traditional Elementary School step team.”

Jones had found his perfect spot and was ready for the parade to start at least 20 minutes early.

“I had to be front and center,” Jones said. “She’s got to be able to see me when she comes through. If not, she’ll be disappointed and I don’t want to deal with that disappointed little girl.”

Thunder Over Louisville and other Kentucky Derby Festival events had to be canceled due to weather. People were just happy for the parade to be one and to enjoy it on a nice day.
