Donald Trump took time Tuesday to remember televangelist Jimmy Swaggart after the news of his death broke.
Swaggart, who fell from grace following a prostitution scandal, died in Louisianna at the age of 90.
“Very sad, Jimmy Swaggart passed away today!” the president wrote on Truth Social. “He was an incredible Man of Faith and, as our Nation’s longest serving Televangelist, inspired millions with his Great Love of God and Country.
“Our hearts and prayers are with his wonderful wife Frances, his son Donnie, and their entire family,” he added. “Jimmy will be deeply missed!”
Swaggart developed a massive following in the 1980s before he was caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans in 1988. He continued to preach after the scandal, but he never had the same massive audience.
“Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ,” a post on his Facebook page read. “Today was the day he has sung about for decades. He met his beloved Savior and entered the portals of glory. At the same time, we rejoice knowing that we will see him again one day.”
Swaggart suffered a cardiac arrest last week, and he had been hospitalized until his death.
