Liverpool forward Diogo Jota dies in car crash

  2. We can now bring you tributes from the UK’s Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who sends her sympathies to Diogo Jota’s family.
  3. Speaking from the House of Commons, Nandy recalls receiving the “heartbreaking news a moment ago before we came in to the chamber that he [Diogo Jota] lost his life at just 28 years of age”.
  4. Nandy extended her condolences, speaking on behalf of the Commons, to Jota’s friends and Liverpool fans “across the world”.
  5. As we’ve been reporting, Liverpool and Portugal football player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, have died in a car crash.
  6. We are working on getting more information on the accident, but here is what we know so far:
  • The accident happened in Zamora, Spain, at around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST)
  • Spain’s Guardia Civil said the car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another car. It then set on fire, they added
  • The accident was just two weeks after Diogo Jota’s wedding day to long-term partner Rute Cardoso, which took place on 22 June
  • Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca said all of Portuguese football is “completely devastated“, while tributes continue to pour in on social media

  3. We’ve just had this statement from Jota’s club, Liverpool.
  4. “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
  5. “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
  6. “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
  7. “We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

  9. Portuguese football club Porto says they are in “mourning” over the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva.
  10. “It is with shock and deep sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks,” the club wrote in a post on social media., external
  11. “Rest in peace,” they added, alongside an image of the brothers in their FC Porto kit.

  16. Here is a statement from the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proenca:
  17. “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, this early morning, in Spain.
  18. “Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.
  19. “On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, they played their football.
  20. “The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked Uefa for a minute’s silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women’s European Championship…
  21. “The loss of Diogo and Andre represent irreplaceable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything, daily, to honour their legacy.”
  22. Less than two weeks ago Diogo Jota and his long-term partner Rute Cardoso tied the knot.
  23. The pair, who have three children together, could be seen joyous and gleeful on their special wedding day, on 22 June.

  27. We can now bring you the full statement from the Guardia Civil, given verbally, confirming the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva:
  28. “The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.
  29. “It was in the early hours, 00:30 local time (23:30 BST), in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.
  30. “The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”
  31. When asked to confirm the identities of those involved in the accident, the Guardia Civil said: “The player and his brother, André Silva.”
  32. The fatal car crash that killed Diogo Jota and his brother, André, took place less than two weeks after his wedding day.
  33. Jota married his wife, Rute Cardoso, on 22 June 2025.
  34. In a post shared on the couple’s social media, the pair wrote: “Yes, forever.”
  35. Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, the Guardia Civil confirmed to the BBC.
  36. His brother, André, also died in the crash, which happened at around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST).
