Liverpool Football Club is “devastated” by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother, the club said in a statement Thursday, calling the incident an “unimaginable loss.”
“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss,” the statement continued.
The club added it would continue to give its “full support” to those affected by the loss.
Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva have died in a car crash in northwestern Spain.
Jota was just 28 and won three major trophies during his time at Liverpool and two UEFA Nations Leagues with the Portuguese national team. His death comes weeks after he got married.
