House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) has been speaking for four hours — and it doesn’t seem like he’ll wrap up any time soon.
Because he’s the party leader in the House, Jeffries is allowed to speak for as long as he wishes.
In 2021, when attempting to slow down the passage of Democrats’ Build Back Better bill, then-minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) spoke for eight hours and 32 minutes. It’s unclear whether Jeffries will attempt to break that record Thursday.
The only person expected to speak after Jeffries ahead of the final vote is Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana).
