House Republicans on Thursday passed President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” sending it to President Trump’s desk. The final vote was 218-214, with two Republicans joining all Democrats in voting against the legislation.
Trump is expected to sign the bill on the Fourth of July, his deadline for getting the package to his desk.
But final passage didn’t come easy. GOP leaders held open procedural votes for hours as they sought to sway holdouts, Trump got directly involved, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) delivered an 8 hour-and-44 minute floor speech railing against the measure. Republican Reps. Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.) voted against the bill in the end.
Still, passing the bill marks a major victory for both Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).
Elsewhere, Trump will join first lady Melania Trump in meeting Thursday with former Israeli hostage Edan Alexander. He’ll then fly to Iowa, where he’ll kick off the nation’s 250th birthday celebration with a speech at the state fairgrounds.
