As the nation gears up to celebrate the 249th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Fourth of July promises fireworks, parades and festivities — along with adjusted hours and closures across the Bay Area and beyond.
While many retailers will remain open, often with modified schedules, essential services and federal operations will largely pause for the holiday.

The U.S. Postal Service will close on Independence Day.

Friday’s designation as a federal holiday means widespread closures across several key services:
Postal Service: The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver or collect mail.
Shipping: FedEx and UPS will suspend their delivery services.

Banks: Most financial institutions, including the Federal Reserve, will be closed. ATMs and online banking remain available.
Government offices: Libraries, DMV offices and other nonessential government services will be closed.
Stock market: The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will not operate.
Whole Foods’ hours will vary by location on the Fourth of July.

Costco will be closed for the holiday. “Independence Day is one of seven holidays that Costco closes its U.S. warehouses,” a company spokesperson said.

Other grocery stores will stay open, though some will operate under special holiday hours:
Trader Joe’s: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Whole Foods: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (hours vary by location)
Safeway, Lucky: Regular hours
Major retail and pharmacy chains will also be open, with some adjustments:

Walmart: Regular hours (typically 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.)
Target: Regular hours, which vary by location
CVS, Walgreens: Most stores open; pharmacy hours may be reduced
Sam’s Club: Closes early at 6 p.m.
IKEA will close at 6 p.m. on Independence Day.

Major Bay Area malls, including Stonestown, Westfield Valley Fair and Stanford Shopping Center: Operating from 10 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m.

Most restaurants and coffee shops will be open, but hours vary widely. Some chains may close early or operate on reduced schedules. It’s best to call ahead or check online for up-to-date information on individual locations.
Muni will operate on a Saturday schedule on the Fourth of July.

San Francisco’s Muni will operate on a Saturday schedule, with additional service to accommodate the annual fireworks show at Fisherman’s Wharf, set to begin at 9:30 p.m. Streets in the area will close as early as 6 a.m. July 3, with full restrictions in place through 5 a.m. July 5.
Expect heavy traffic and reroutes. Muni will run shuttle services from Civic Center, Caltrain and Market Street to Fisherman’s Wharf from 2 p.m. to midnight.
Treasure Island will be closed to cars, except for residents.
Officials recommend planning ahead, using public transit and allowing extra travel time.
