CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians rearranged their pitching staff in the wake of Luis Ortiz’s leave of absence amid gambling allegations, according to league sources.
Left-hander Joey Cantillo was recalled from Triple-A Columbus and will start tonight against the Cubs in Ortiz’s spot in the rotation. Ortiz was placed on a non-disciplinary leave of absence through the All-Star break while MLB investigates information that he influenced bets when he was pitching for the Guardians.
The Guardians also recalled left-hander Doug Nikhazy from Columbus to replace lefty Kolby Allard, who was designated for assignment.
Allard pitched some big innings for the Guardians this season, including three scoreless innings on Wednesday night in a 5-4 loss to the Cubs.
But the Guards needed a fresh arm in the bullpen. This is Nikhazy’s second tour with the Guardians. He made his big league debut on April 26 in a start against the Red Sox. He allowed six runs on five hits in three innings with six walks.
Cantillo opened the year in the Guardians’ bullpen where he made 22 appearances. He was optioned to Columbus in order to be a starter, a role he’s been in most of his career.
In four starts at Columbus, he posted a 3.86 ERA in 11 2/3 innings. Cantillo struck out 15, walked four and allowed seven hits.
In his 22 relief appearances with Cleveland, he went 1-0 with a 3.87 ERA (12 earned runs in 28 1/3 innings).
Nikhazy, the Guardians’ second-round pick in 2021, made 14 starts at Columbus. He went 5-4 with a 4.26 ERA (32 earned runs in 67 2/3 innings). He struck out 71, walked 31 and allowed 64 hits.
Allard, a former first-round pick of the Braves, signed a minor league deal with the Guardians that included a spring-training invite. He had a great spring, but didn’t make the opening day roster.
He agreed to open the year at Columbus and by the end of April he was in Cleveland. Allard went 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA (10 earned runs in 35 1/3 innings) with 16 strikeouts, eight walks and 43 hits allowed for the Guardians.
