Ruidoso officials to address community after deadly floods at press conference

RUIDOSO, N.M. (credit: KFOX14/CBS4) — Officials in Ruidoso, New Mexico, held a press conference following the three deaths reported due to floods on Tuesday.

People at the press conference will be Mayor Lynn Crawford, Ron Sena, VOR Village Manager; Michael Martinez, VOR Deputy Village Manager; Eric Queller, VOR Emergency Manager; Brian Samson, Lincoln County Emergency Manager; Jason Burns, Lincoln County Manager.

They discussed the historic flash floods caused by 2-3 inches of rainfall on the South Fork burn scar, the current recovery and response operations, emergency measures in place and public safety status.

The victims, who were swept downstream by the unprecedented floodwaters, include a man aged between 40 and 50, a 4-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy. Officials said they are not releasing their identities at the moment.

One person remains missing, officials. The other three people who were missing have been found.

Officials said they have been in contact with federal and state officials for resources and help.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is set to arrive in Ruidoso Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Crawford said Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, also called him.

Crawford said the flash flood emergency was declared around 2 p.m. He said rain is also expected on Wednesday saying the most critical times will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Crawford also said he’s not encouraging visitors to visit the village at the moment.

There have been several power outages reported in Ruidoso as well. Twelve roads remain closed in the village.

Officials said about eight horses are dead, and many other pets have been found dead.

Donations of cleaning goods and supplies can be dropped off at the Humane Society Resale shop located at 25962 US HWY 70, or monetary donations can be given at the Community Foundation of Lincoln County.
