Four weeks ago, Aitana Bonmati was taken to hospital for treatment for viral meningitis. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner missed Spain’s friendly against Japan and spent several days in hospital recovering.
The Barcelona star joined up with Spain’s squad a few days before their opening game against Portugal but did not make her first start of the tournament until the third game. She has now scored the goal in extra time to send Spain through to the final.

Did Bonmati mean to beat Berger at her near post? The midfielder does not look up but Berger was pointing her defenders towards the cross and left the smallest gap for Bonmati to find. It still required power and precision, but that’s why she is a two-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Germany gave them a good test tonight but they just ran out of steam after battling through that quarter-final against France on penalties.
