Heat advisory in effect Monday for Metro Detroit; cooler conditions ahead

A heat advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. for Metro Detroit as temperatures are expected to feel above 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday’s temperature, humidity and light wind are contributing to the conditions, according to Andrew Arnold, a meteorologist at the NWS Detroit office.

“It’ll stay warm tomorrow, but it should be some cool air making its way in,” Arnold said. “It’ll be some cooler temperatures working their way southward later in the day tomorrow… we might not see heat advisory criteria tomorrow but sill close enough to be something to keep an eye on if you’re outdoors.”

Thunderstorms could also cross the region in the afternoon as the mercury climbs near 90, according to NWS.

The average high for the date is 83.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Robert Bowen Senior Center in Pontiac will serve as a cooling center.

As heat rises, so do energy bills, as residents power on air conditioning to cool their homes.

DTE Energy announced Monday that it’d be helping residents who have qualified for energy assistance this year via a $800,000 donation to United Way for Southeastern Michigan to provide relief to elderly, unemployed, underemployed and disabled customers struggling to pay their energy bills.

There are chances of thunderstorm in the afternoon Tuesday as temperatures peak in the low 90s.

Wednesday will cool to the mid 80s with chances for rain south of I-69. Thursday is forecast to have highs topping out in the low 80s.

Friday is expected to see temperatures in the 70s.

“Warm to start the week, cooling off through mid week into the late part of the week,” Arnold said.
