RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Multiple people were injured in a shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort on Monday morning. People are asked to avoid the area.
The Reno Police Department (RPD) responded to the report of an active shooter at the Grand Sierra Resort at 7:25 a.m. on July 28.
Police found the suspect within 4 to 5 minutes and an officer-involved shooting occurred outside the valet. Authorities say the suspect, who was only identified as an adult man, was transported to the hospital and there is no threat to the public. No word on the suspect’s condition has been released.
Authorities say there are multiple victims with varying levels of injuries they’re working to make sure everyone is accounted for before an exact number is released.
Several officers were involved and some received minor injuries but none of them were shot.
The shooting happened primarily outside the front door and in the valet area along with the north side of the parking lot. Authorities say the area will be closed for a while.
The Sparks Police Department will investigate the officer involved shooting.
The Grand Sierra Resort released the following statement:
We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today. Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident.
We are incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team, whose immediate actions helped prevent further harm. We also want to thank the Reno Police Department for their rapid assistance and coordination, which was instrumental in quickly eliminating the threat and protecting lives.
The Sparks Police Department is now leading the investigation. We are cooperating fully and encourage all media inquiries regarding the investigation to be directed to them.
Grand Sierra Resort remains fully operational, and we are actively working to support guests and team members who may have been impacted. There is no ongoing threat to the public.
Reno city councilman Devon Reese took to social media expressing condolences for the multiple lives he said were lost in the shooting. News 4-Fox 11 is awaiting confirmation from law enforcement regarding how many people were injured and if there are fatalities.
On social media, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo said the Nevada Department of Public Safety is assisting local authorities with the investigation.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve has issued the following statement:
“My heart goes out to everyone who has been impacted by the tragic shooting incident at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR) in Reno this morning. While it is very early in the investigation and details are scarce, I want to thank our region’s first responders and medical personnel for their courage and heroic efforts today.
Our thoughts are with the Grand Sierra staff, the guests of the resort and anyone who has been impacted by this incident. As the investigation continues, we will provide more information as it becomes available.”
Nevada Senator Jacky Rosen expressed gratitude to law enforcement who responded to the shooting on social media site X.
