Strong storms strike Eastern Iowa overnight

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A round of strong storms moved through the KCRG-TV9 viewing area overnight, leading to reports of down trees, branches and power lines across the region.

Several warnings were issued as a system of storms packing strong winds raced through Eastern Iowa.

In Linn County, the Robins Fire Department reported wind speeds that nearly reached 100 miles per hour.

Emergency Management Agencies across Eastern Iowa also report downed trees and branches. Buchanan County Emergency Management Coordinator Rick Wulfekuhle tells KCRG-TV9 at least two homes haves trees on them, but there are no reports of any injuries.

The Independence Fire Department says it was dispatched to more than 10 calls for service because of the storm, adding that crews helped with several downed trees and power lines, street flooding and trees on homes.

The storms also knocked out power to customers across Iowa. As of 4:55 a.m., PowerOutage.us reports more than 24,000 customers were without power, including thousands in Eastern Iowa.
