Twins get major haul for Duran

In the past six days, the San Francisco Giants’ playoff odds on FanGraphs have slipped from 39.4 percent to 15.8 percent. They’ve lost five in a row and now sit at .500, needing to pass the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres to move back into a playoff spot.

“It’s not a team that fills you with confidence,” writes Grant Brisbee, “especially if the question has to do with a “missing piece” that can make them whole. It’s felt like 26 missing pieces over the last two weeks.”

The Athletic wrote on Sunday that rival executives were starting to think the Giants needed to trade closer Camilo Doval, and in the days since there have been suggesting Doval could be on the move. Here’s more on Doval from Will Sammon and Andrew Baggarly:

Doval, an All-Star in 2023, has rebounded nicely following a disastrous 2024 season in which he was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in August and finished with a 4.88 ERA. He’s also made improvements that two coaching staffs spent years coaxing him to address, slide stepping to control the running game and reducing issues with the pitch clock. His arm talent continues to be undeniable — his cutter averages 98.1 mph — but it’s fair to wonder if Giants management would feel ultra-confident watching him pitch in October with a season on the line.

Given the various reports suggesting nearly every contender is looking for bullpen help, the Giants fall from contention could supply the market with another late-inning arm that would be of interest.
