Adam Sandler leaves the Oscars after yelling in Timothée Chalamet’s ear

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Adam Sandler doesn’t do dress codes.

The 58-year-old comedian showed up to the 2025 Oscars on Sunday, March 2 in baggy basketball shorts, sneakers, and a baby blue zip-up hoodie — standing out in a sea of tuxedos at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

During host Conan O’Brien‘s opening monologue, the late-night legend spotted Sandler in the audience and called him out.

“Adam, what are you wearing?” O’Brien, 61, asked.

“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up!” quipped Sandler, whose penchant for relaxed fits is beloved by fans.

Doubling down, O’Brien said, “You’re dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m., Adam.”

The 50 First Dates icon shot back. “You know what, Conan, I like the way I look, ’cause I’m a good person,” Sandler continued. “I don’t care about what I wear and what I don’t wear. My snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers!?”

The bit escalated as the Saturday Night Live alum dramatically decided to leave the ceremony. “I’m going. Off I go. I’m leaving!” Sandler announced. But before heading for the exits, he made a quick pit stop at Timothée Chalamet‘s seat, leaned in, and let out a loud “Chalamet!” straight into the actor’s ear — drawing a huge laugh from the crowd.

Of course, it didn’t take long for social media to react.

“Adam Sandler is living the dream,” one person posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“He’s definitely comfier than everyone at the Oscars 🤣,” another added.

“Love it, what a goof,” a third chimed in.

But not everyone was on board with the relaxed look.

“Cringe,” one user wrote.

“Nope. Wear a suit,” another added.

The Happy Gilmore star has long defended his love for baggy fits. In a 2023 interview with Barstool Sports, he admitted it started as a flex. “I was jacked… so I would hide it and surprise ya at the beach when the stuff came off,” he joked. These days, though, he keeps things baggy for a different reason. “Now I go loose ’cause it should be hidden,” he quipped.
