Oscar viewers were left feeling disgusted after Adrien Brody’s unexpected move while preparing to give his speech at the ceremony broadcast on Sunday, March 2—so much so that one has called for his “arrest.”
As he rushed to the stage to accept his award for Best Actor, as seen in a clip reuploaded to X by the New York Post, The Brutalist star stopped suddenly and turned back to the crowd, seeking out his girlfriend, Georgina Chapman. She stepped forward to help out as he took the gum from his mouth and threw it in her direction with an underhanded motion, but, unfortunately, his aim fell flat. Chapman threw her arms up in defeat as the discarded item appeared to careen to the ground.
Fans were appalled by the move, quickly taking to social media to express their distaste.
“arrest adrien brody for hurling his gum at his wife at the oscars,” one demanded.
Others were desperate to hear “the internal monologue” that led to his decision.
“Gross,” someone else said simply underneath the video, while another lamented how “disrespected” Chapman had been.
“Who does that?” someone else questioned, some offering alternatives: “Just don’t chew it while talking,” one said, as another suggested he “should have just put it in his pocket.”
But a rare few also thought her attempt to help him out was sort of “romantic,” with one reply admitting, “i would not catch gum for anybody i will tell you that this is a love from another [plain] of existence.”
Viewers expressed frustration with him again after other winners’ speeches were cut short by Hulu, feeling his time, which went well over that allotted, was to blame.
“Adrian Brody winning for an AI enhanced performance and then speaking so long Hulu cut off the entire show…. CHOP,” one complained—rather brutally.
