New York state Attorney General Letitia James calls President Donald Trump’s accusations against her of falsified real estate records “baseless.”
“Let me just say to all New Yorkers and to all Americans: The allegations are baseless. The allegations are nothing more than a revenge tour,” she told NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday.
NY1 had obtained a criminal referral letter written by the president’s federal housing director. The letter claims James, “in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records.”
The letter questions whether James committed mortgage fraud to obtain better loan terms. For homes purchased in 1983 and 2000, James is listed as her father’s wife instead of his daughter.
A Virginia home James purchased with her niece in 2023 was listed as James’ principal residence. Her office said James has always been clear the house was not her primary residence but her nieces’.
“I will not be silenced. I will not be bullied. I will not bend. I will not break. And I will not bow to anyone. No one is above the law, including the president of these United States,” she said, adding her office will continue to stand up against Trump.
James said she will officially respond to letter “at the appropriate time and in the appropriate way.”
“I am more focused, again, on standing up for the freedoms, the liberties and the rule of law in the state of New York,” she said.
The attorney general has been at the forefront of legal fights against the Trump administration on multiple issues, including her win in the civil case against Trump.
James also discussed the upcoming New York City Democratic mayoral primary.
James said to “stay tuned” on who she plans on to endorse.
The candidate leading the polls is former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 shortly after James’ office released a report finding Cuomo had sexual harassed multiple women.
When asked if she would consider endorsing Cuomo, James said she will support a candidate “without any drama.”
“I am supporting a candidate who is someone without any drama and whoever is the mayor of the city of New York, I am prepared to work with, again, because we are here to serve New Yorkers. But I’m hoping that the next mayor of the city of New York who will not bring any additional drama to the residence of the great state of New York and the city,” she said.
