NHL trade deadline live updates: Latest trades, Brad Marchand and Mikko Rantanen updates, deadline time

The NHL trade deadline is Friday, and there are quite a few notable players reportedly available.

Carolina made the biggest move of the trading period in January when it acquired Mikko Rantanen from Colorado for Martin Necas, Jack Drury and picks. But the Hurricanes are reportedly closing in on a trade to send Rantanen to Dallas, according to Sportsnet, after unsuccessful extension negotiations.

Boston’s Brad Marchand is another pending free agent who is a part of trade talks, according to The Athletic. The longtime Bruins forward/agitator, now 36, is moving to Florida, Sportsnet reported.

Nashville has been among the busiest teams leading up to deadline day, sending Gus Nyquist to Minnesota and trading Tommy Novak and Luke Schenn to Pittsburgh in the last week.

One more Atlantic Division trade: The Maple Leafs are acquiring defenseman Brandon Carlo from the Boston Bruins, The Athletic reported.

Blue Jackets acquire Luke Kunin from Sharks

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquire Luke Kunin from the San Jose Sharks for a 2025 fourth-round pick, the teams announced Friday.

The deal was first reported by The Athletic.

Columbus is a surprise team in the East, currently sitting in the first wild-card spot. Kunin, the former Predators forward, is on an expiring contract and has 11 goals and 7 assists in 63 games.

Casey Mittelstedt, Charlie Coyle traded in Boston-Colorado swap | Report

Boston is sending forward Charlie Coyle and a 2026 fifth-round pick to Colorado for center Casey Mittelstadt, forward prospect Will Zellers and a 2025 second-round pick, The Athletic reported.

Coyle, 33, has struggled this season along with a lot of the Bruins not named David Pastrnak, with 15-7-22 in 64 games after totaling 60 points last year. He is signed through next season.

Mittelstadt signed a three-year deal with Colorado in the offseason to underwhelming results so far in 2024-25 (11-23-34 in 63 games).

Detroit acquires Petr Mrazek, Craig Smith from Chicago

Less than an hour left until the deadline closes.

Detroit announces a trade: The Red Wings acquire forward Craig Smith and goaltender Petr Mrazek from the Blackhawks in exchange for forward Joe Veleno.

Mrazek has had a miserable season in the first of a two-year deal worth $4.25 million AAV. Smith, the former Predators forward, is 9-7-16 in 40 games with the Blackhawks this season.

Toronto added a middle-six center on Friday, acquiring Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers, the Maple Leafs announced.

Toronto is sending a 2027 first-round pick (top-10 protected, according to The Athletic) and forward prospect Nikita Grebenkin to Philadelphia while also acquiring a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick. The Flyers are retaining salary.

Laughton, a 2012 first-round selection by the Flyers, had spent his entire career in Philadelphia but will move to Toronto with a year remaining on his deal past this season.

TSN first reported the deal.

Schenn was traded along with Tommy Novak to Pittsburgh from Nashville in exchange for Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

The Penguins end up with a second-round pick, a fourth-round pick and Novak for Bunting and a 2026 fourth-rounder over the two trades.

Buffalo Sabres trade Dylan Cozens to Ottawa, acquire Josh Norris

The Buffalo Sabres acquired center Josh Norris and defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker from the Ottawa Senators for center Dylan Cozens, defenseman Dennis Gilbert and a 2026 second-round pick, the Sabres announced Friday.

Norris and Cozens are the biggest names moving in this deal. Norris, 25, scored 35 goals in 2021-22 but battled through injuries the next two seasons. This year, Norris has 20 goals and 13 assists in 53 games.

Cozens, 24, similarly had a notable season in his early 20s before trending the other way. He totaled 31-37-68 in 2022-23 (and signed a long-term contract extension) but slumped to 18-29-47 in 79 games last season. Cozens has totaled 11 goals and 20 assists in 61 games this year.

Gilbert and Bernard-Docker are both depth defensemen.

Andrei Kuzmenko, a part of a deal on Jan. 30 from Calgary to Philadelphia, is on the move again.

The Kings acquired the winger from the Flyers in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick, the teams announced.

Anthony Beauvillier traded to Washington

Another former Predators trade deadline acquisition is on the move.

The Washington Capitals acquired Anthony Beauvillier from Pittsburgh in exchange for a second-round pick in 2025, the teams announced Friday.

Jason Zucker signs extension with Buffalo

The Buffalo Sabres signed forward Jason Zucker to a two-year contract extension. Sportsnet reported Friday.

Zucker, the former Preds forward, has 18 goals and 26 assists this season on a one-year deal in Buffalo. The AAV of the extension is $4.75 million, per Sportsnet.

Report: Mikko Rantanen, Dallas not yet close on an extension

TSN reported Friday morning that the Dallas Stars and Mikko Rantanen are not yet close to an extension, which complicates any trade talks with Carolina.

Will the Carolina Hurricanes trade Mikko Rantanen, one month after acquiring him?

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Hurricanes and Dallas Stars are in discussions about a deal to send Mikko Rantanen to Texas pending negotiations of a Rantanen extension with Dallas. Full details about the potential trade are unreported.

Rantanen was traded in January to Carolina from Colorado in exchange for forwards Martin Necas, Jack Drury, a 2025 second-round pick, a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick. A pending UFA, extension talks between Rantanen and Carolina have reportedly made little progress. It does not help that Rantanen’s on-ice production with Carolina has been underwhelming (2 goals, 4 assists in 12 games).

Multiple reports indicated that Carolina was considering to move Rantanen again before the deadline. The Athletic reported earlier this week that the Hurricanes were taking calls on Rantanen.

For Carolina, a team that has been very good for several seasons but has not broken through for a run to the Stanley Cup Final, the question is: Do the Hurricanes hold onto Rantanen for the playoff run and risk losing him in the summer, or do they cut their losses with no guarantee of an extension?

One other question: Why did Carolina spend so much to acquire a player without an idea that he would sign long-term?

Brock Nelson trade: Colorado Avalanche acquire NY Islanders forward

Pending free agent Brock Nelson, a longtime Islanders forward, is now a member of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Islanders announced late Thursday that they traded Nelson and forward prospect William Dufour to the Avs for center prospect (and former first-round pick) Calum Ritchie, defenseman Oliver Kylington, a conditional 2026 first-round pick and a conditional 2028 third-round pick.

The first-round pick will be in 2026 if the Avs make the playoffs next season, or in 2027 if they do not. The 2028 third-round pick goes to the Islanders if Colorado wins the Stanley Cup this season and Nelson plays more than half the playoff games.

Ritchie is the main piece in the trade, a 20-year-old center who is considered one of the top prospects in the league. (Ritchie was ranked No. 21 in The Athletic’s latest NHL prospect rankings.)

Nelson’s islanders career ends at 901 games, with a 295-279-574 career stat line over 12 seasons. He had nine 20-goal seasons, including 20 goals in 61 games.

The latest on Brad Marchand: Will the Bruins star be traded at the NHL trade deadline?

The Athletic reported Thursday that the Bruins “are open” to trading their longtime star who is in the final season of an eight-year deal.

Marchand, a likely Hall of Famer, is 24 points short of 1,000 for his career. As odd it may be for Bruins fans, it is possible he reaches that milestone in another team’s jersey.

What time is the NHL trade deadline?

The NHL trade deadline is at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, March 7.

Will Nashville Predators make another trade?

The Predators have already made a couple trades this week, with Gus Nyquist sent to Minnesota and Luke Schenn and Tommy Novak traded to Pittsburgh.

Among the other Predators players that could be traded on Friday include:

O’Reilly, 34, would be the biggest rumored trade target to move, and despite a drop in overall numbers is on pace to exceed his even-strength goals total from last season and hit 50 points overall. He is signed through 2026-27 at $4.5 million and has a wealth of playoff experience. Sportsnet reported in January that teams had inquired about O’Reilly’s availability.

Sissons, 31, is signed through next season at $2.85 million and has played in 71 career playoff games. Since the turn of the calendar to 2025, SIssons has 4 goals and 11 assists in 23 games. For teams looking for term in a bottom-six center, Sissons has to be high on the target list.

McCarron, 30, is also signed through next season at $900,000.
