A surprise AFC team entered into the DK Metcalf sweepstakes before officially trading for the 27-year-old playmaker prior to free agency.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks agreed to a trade that dealt DK Metcalf to the Steel City in exchange for a second-round selection. Upon the deal’s completion, Metcalf inked a five-year, $150 million extension that ties him to Pittsburgh through 2029.
Through this transaction, the Steelers added Pro-Bowl level support for whoever the franchise signs at quarterback this offseason. Metcalf’s presence will also bring receiver help opposite Pittsburgh’s 2022 second-round target George Pickens.
Metcalf caught 66 passes for 992 yards and five touchdowns this past year in a season riddled with injuries. He missed two games in 2024 due to an MCL sprain which led him to finish with a career-low 108 targets.
Pickens finished 2024 with the second-most targets of his career at 103. He went for 900 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 53 catches.
With the Metcalf deal official, Seattle clears more cap space and continues its offensive retool under second-year head coach Mike Macdonald. Earlier in the week, Metcalf requested to be traded from Seattle, and the team abided to his wishes.
Metcalf wasn’t the only trade Seattle executed in the past few days. Just two days ago, the franchise dealt starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round selection.
