Cam Ward gets Warren Moon’s blessing to wear No. 1 jersey for the Tennessee Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Tennessee Titans had a special guest attend Cam Ward’s introductory press conference.

The No. 1 pick in the NFL draft was surprised by Houston Oilers legend and NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon.

Moon gave his blessing for Ward to wear the retired No. 1 Titans jersey.

“I’m excited that Mr. Moon was able to bless me with giving me this number,” Ward said. “To me, the number would never mean anything. It’s all about the plays you make on the field, so I’m ready for this opportunity with my teammates.”

Ward called Moon last month and asked for permission to wear the number. Moon decided a few days ago he would allow Ward to don it next season.

“Cam will be starting a new, not regime here, but just a new freshness in this organization to revitalize it and get it back to where it was a number of years ago as one of the more successful organizations in the league,” Moon said.

Moon’s No. 1 had been one of eight jerseys retired by the Titans.

However, Moon said the number belongs to the Oilers, not Tennessee, which led to the decision to give it to Ward.

Moon said he’s unsure if the Oilers jerseys will return, which also factored into the decision.
