OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X that ChatGPT added “one million users in the last hour.”

The big picture: The adoption of ChatGPT appears to be accelerating.

Driving the news: OpenAI last week released a new-image generating feature that sparked a wave of Studio Ghibli, The Simpsons and The Muppets inspired AI art.

  • The virality of the images led to Altman posting on X that “our GPUs are melting” and “we are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient.”
  • Altman then asked people to “chill” on generating images, saying that his “team needs sleep.”

What they’re saying: David Sacks, the venture capitalist advising President Trump on crypto and AI policy, replied to Altman’s tweet with a link to a blog that reads: “The next big thing will start out looking like a toy.”

  • Altman responded, “yeah, i just didn’t think it would be this toy :),” referring to the image generator.
  • OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request to comment.
