PHOENIX (AZFamily) — More than 100 properties for major department store chain JCPenney have been sold to a Massachusetts-based private equity firm, and several of those stores are in Arizona.

Arizona’s Family has confirmed that of the 119 locations sold to Onyx Partners in a $947 million all-cash sale, three of four Arizona locations are in the Valley.

Earlier this year, the retailer announced it would close several locations, citing expiring lease agreements, market conditions and other business considerations. However, this sale isn’t expected to impact store operations.

“The real estate transaction announced yesterday represents a change in landlord but does not impact JCPenney store operations,” the company told The Independent.

Locations for the affected stores span across 35 states, including more than a dozen in California and over 20 in Texas. Among the stores are high-performers such as Bronx, New York; Glendale, California; and Bakersfield, California, which each totaled more than $22 million in sales in 2023.

JCPenney filed for bankruptcy at the height of the pandemic in 2020. The chain was later acquired by Simon Property Group and real estate developer Brookfield in a $1.75 billion deal, as reported by the Associated Press.

JCPenney’s creditors had been seeking buyers for the retailer’s real estate portfolio since its Chapter 11 filing, which was being managed through a trust.

The sale is expected to close in September.
