ATLANTA — Family, friends and fans of Atlanta rapper Young Scooter will gather Thursday evening for a balloon release honoring his life and legacy.
The event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bessie Branham Park, 2051 Delano Drive NE in Atlanta. Organizers ask attendees to bring red, white or blue balloons only for the memorial.
Young Scooter, whose real name was Kenneth Bailey, died on March 28, his 39th birthday, after suffering a fatal leg injury while fleeing from Atlanta police in the Lakewood Heights neighborhood. The Fulton County Medical Examiner ruled his death accidental, stating Bailey was hurt by sharp wooden debris after jumping a fence. Atlanta police confirmed that no officers discharged firearms or used force during the incident.

Bailey was a prominent figure in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene, known for his 2012 mixtape Street Lottery and the single Colombia. He collaborated with major artists including Future, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Migos, and Rick Ross.
The balloon release comes days after the arrest of Demetria Spence, the woman accused of making a false 911 call that police say led officers to the Lakewood Heights home. She remains in the Fulton County Jail and is charged with transmitting a false public alarm.
On Wednesday, Bailey’s family released the following statement through his publicist:
“We are completely devastated by the loss of Kenneth ‘Young Scooter’ Bailey and are currently still waiting for more information to understand the circumstance.
Young Scooter was more than just a hip hop artist he was a phenomenal father and mentor to a lot of Atlanta youth pursuing both sports and music. Scooter was their advocate and support system. He always encouraged his children and the youth to pursue their dreams no matter what.
The family is grateful for the outpouring of support and love from the city and all over the country. At this time, they are requesting privacy and prayers as they grieve and wait for answers.”
