Batman and Rambo star dies suddenly at 60 after collapsing on beach

Israeli actor Alon Aboutboul, best known internationally for his roles in The Dark Knight Rises and Rambo III, has died at the age of 60.

According to news channel N12, the star collapsed on HaBonim Beach near Tel Aviv on Tuesday morning after telling bystanders he felt unwell.

Witnesses told the news outlet Aboutboul had just returned from a swim when he suddenly collapsed in front of onlookers.

According to Ynet, a beachgoer said: “It happened in an instant. He went into the water and everything seemed perfectly fine.

“After a few minutes, he suddenly came out of the water, approached people and said he wasn’t feeling well, and then they called for help. Everyone was really scared, he came out of the water and collapsed on the beach.

“Everyone wanted to help, and they recognised who it was when he came out of the water. This is a terrible tragedy here this morning, everyone here is in a big shock.”

Emergency services performed CPR for nearly an hour, but he could not be revived. The exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

While much of his career was rooted in Israeli cinema, he also built a profile in Hollywood.

Aboutboul appeared as Nissem in 1988’s Rambo III then in 2005, Alon Aboutboul featured in Steven Spielberg’s Munich, a political thriller based on Israel’s Mossad-led response to the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre.

Three years later, he starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in Ridley Scott’s spy drama Body of Lies.

His Hollywood profile grew further in 2012 when he took on the role of Dr. Leonid Pavel, a Russian nuclear physicist, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Following that, Aboutboul appeared in 2015’s Septembers of Shiraz, playing a revolutionary guard opposite Salma Hayek and Adrien Brody.

In 2016, he portrayed a former arms dealer turned terrorist in the action thriller London Has Fallen, sharing the screen with Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman.

Most recently, Aboutboul starred in FX’s critically acclaimed series Snowfall alongside Damson Idris.

His international TV credits also include Homeland, Twin Peaks, The Leftovers and FBI: International.

Israeli Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar paid tribute to Aboutboul, calling the news of his death “deeply painful.”

He shared on X: “Last night I watched an interview with him, where he talked about filming a movie he recently participated in, and the passion for the profession that radiated from him was evident even after so many years in the field.

“Alon was an Ophir Award and Television Academy Award winner and over the years portrayed a wide range of characters to which he brought depth and emotion, leaving a deep mark on Israeli culture. May his memory be blessed.”

He is survived by his wife, actress Shir Bilia, and their four children. The family split their time between Israel and Los Angeles.
