Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) slammed the Trump administration, saying he has never seen an administration “do something so monumentally wrong and that so staggeringly hurts American people.”
During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Booker, who last week gave a record-breaking 25-hour speech aimed at combating Trump’s moves in the White House, was asked about National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett’s defense of the president’s sweeping global tariffs.
On Sunday, Hassett said he doesn’t believe there will be a “big effect on the consumer in the U.S.,” noting that over 50 countries are also “coming to the table” to negotiate.
Booker heavily criticized the tariffs and “the chaos he has unleashed on America.”
“God bless, Kevin, but I’ve never seen an administration in my lifetime do something so monumentally wrong and that so staggeringly hurts American people,” he responded. “I’ve been hearing all day yesterday, from frightened Americans who’ve saved for their entire lives, for retirement in the coming months, but now know they can’t because in one fell swoop, Donald Trump has devastated their retirement accounts, their 401(k)s.”
He noted that amid Trump’s recent moves, Senate Republicans over the weekend approved their budget resolution that includes an extension to Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.
“This is all happening in the backdrop of what happened in the Senate this week where they’re pushing an extension of the Trump tax cuts that overwhelmingly went to the wealthiest of Americans,” he said.
Booker also predicted that Trump will go down in history for “having the worst first 100 days in the last century of any president that’s ever taken that office.”
“The chaos he has unleashed on America, the financial insecurity that he has brought to people’s lives, this is not what he promised people,” Booker said.
Last week, Booker set a new record for the longest Senate speech in history by holding the upper chamber’s floor for more than 25 hours. Throughout the speech, he criticized Trump and his administration for their policies and decisions since taking office in January.
