Boston Celtics continue troubling trend after disappointing Heat loss

BOSTON — The Celtics have a chance to match an NBA record for road victories this season, but there is a troubling trend that’s appeared as part of their schedule. Every time the C’s have had a long road trip of at least three games, in their first home game back, they’ve lost all five of those games.

This time, the Celtics went a perfect 6-0 on their road trip as they won by double-digits each game. But as they returned to TD Garden for a showdown against the rival Heat on Wednesday, they fell 124-103, tying their largest loss of the season.

“Not an excuse or anything, but those first games back, that’s always a tough one just from a calibration standpoint,” Jaylen Brown said. “We’ve been in three, four different time zones, three different time zones. You’ve been away from home. You just get home and kind of get settled and then you have to play a basketball game. So sometimes, it be like that sometimes.

“It’s not an excuse. Of course we don’t make excuses. But first game back off a long road trip is always tough. I thought we had a lot of good looks tonight. We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well and that put us in some spots, and we turned it over a little too much.”

It’s not necessarily a surprise to see the Celtics struggle after those long road trips. There’s an inclination to relax coming home after being away for days. They’re 0-5 after such games for a reason. Those losses are: Nov. 6 vs. the Warriors, Jan. 10 vs. the Kings, Jan. 27 vs. the Rockets, Feb. 6 vs. Dallas, and now, the Heat loss.

Fortunately, the Celtics are done with lengthy road trips this season. They won’t play three straight road games against the same team in the playoffs. The C’s have also been dominant on the road this season, putting together a 32-7 record. That’s two wins away from matching the 2015-16 Warriors for most road wins in a single year.

“It’s definitely just an adjustment,” Luke Kornet said. “You come back and you’ve been on the road, which in some ways is easier and some ways hard and stuff. A lot of times you’re just traveling back. A lot of the time you’re glad to get home and glad to get back. It’s kind of hard to say, who really knows.

“I feel like there’s part of being on the road that’s a little bit of like a stressed environment of being on the road. And then you get home and honestly just happy to get back to the family and stuff like that. But frankly, that’s not really an excuse for nights like tonight. We need to do a better job of figuring that out and winning those games.”
