Mariona Caldentey’s Spain set up a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final against England by defeating Germany 1-0 in the Euro 2025 semi-finals.
After Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang’s heroics last night for the Lionesses, Caldentey lined up for La Roja at Letzigrund, aiming for a first European Championship final since 1997.
It was the world champions that started the better with Esther González testing German stopper Ann-Katrin Berger before Irene Paredes’ header hit the post.
But the second half saw the Germans dominate with Klara Bühl going close. The eight-time European champions could’ve won it at the death but Cata Coll produced two sensational saves, first denying Bühl and then Carlotta Wamser from close range.
Mariona was substituted in extra-time on 103 minutes for Athenea del Castillo and 10 minutes later, the Spaniards had their winner. Aitana Bonmatí managed to wriggle free of defender Rebecca Knaak before firing in from a tight angle.
The result means Spain will face England at St. Jakob-Park in Basel on Sunday, just as they did in the World Cup final in Sydney two years ago when Olga Carmona gave La Roja victory.
