OpenAI’s ChatGPT gained one million users within an hour of launching a free Ghibli-style image generator. The feature, allowing users to create anime-inspired artwork, was initially for paid users and now includes limits for free-tier users due to high demand.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has achieved a milestone, adding one million users within just one hour following the release of its free Ghibli-style image generation feature. The announcement was made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who described the surge in user activity as unprecedented.

The Ghibli-style image generator, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, allows users to create enchanting visuals inspired by Studio Ghibli’s iconic animation style. Initially exclusive to paid subscribers, the feature was rolled out to free-tier users on March 29. Users have been transforming their photos into whimsical, anime-inspired artworks, flooding the internet with creative and nostalgic content.

Altman shared the news on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “The ChatGPT launch 26 months ago was one of the craziest viral moments I’d ever seen, and we added one million users in five days. We added one million users in the last hour.” The overwhelming popularity of the feature has led OpenAI to implement restrictions for free users, limiting them to three image generations per day, while paid subscribers enjoy higher limits.

The rollout of the free Ghibli-style image generator has not only boosted ChatGPT’s appeal but also highlighted the growing demand for AI-powered creative tools. As users continue to explore the feature’s capabilities, OpenAI’s servers have faced challenges in managing the surge in activity, prompting Altman to urge users to “chill on generating images.”

To create Studio Ghibli-style images in ChatGPT, follow these steps:

Open ChatGPT: Log in to your ChatGPT account via the app or website. Ensure you’re using a version that supports image generation features, such as GPT-4o with the Ghibli-style generator enabled.
Enter Your Prompt: Provide a detailed and creative description of the image you want to generate. For example: “Create a Studio Ghibli-style illustration of a magical forest with whimsical creatures under a glowing moon.”
Generate Your Image: Submit your prompt, and ChatGPT will process it to create the Ghibli-style artwork. If you’re using the free version, keep in mind there’s a limit of three image generations per day.
