The Emmy winner, 55, told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview at the 2025 NBCU Emmy Luncheon in Los Angeles on Friday, April 11, that he learned of his Euphoria costar’s amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis the same day that Dane, 52, exclusively shared it with PEOPLE.

“I haven’t been able to speak with him yet,” Domingo said. “I just got the news yesterday too, and I’m wishing him well. I look forward to working with him.”

In the HBO series, Domingo plays Ali, the sponsor of Zendaya‘s Rue, while Dane plays Cal Jacobs, the Jacobs family patriarch. The show was renewed for a third season in February 2022, and production kicked off two months ago.

Dane revealed his diagnosis with the rare degenerative disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which causes progressive paralysis of the muscles, to PEOPLE on April 10.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he said. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” Dane added. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

The Grey’s Anatomy alum shares two children, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13, with wife Rebecca Gayheart.

With ALS, patients often experience slurred speech, after experiencing twitching or weakness in a limb. They slowly lose their ability to speak, eat, walk and breathe independently, given that the disease affects the nerve cells in the brain and spine that control muscle movement, per the Mayo Clinic.

According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, people usually live three to five years after being diagnosed with ALS, which there is no cure for. However, some patients can live for decades.

Other stars who have been diagnosed with ALS include Aaron LazarJohn Driskell HopkinsKenneth MitchellStephen Hawking, Roberta Flack and Joe Bonsall.

PEOPLE confirmed that Dane is set to return to filming Euphoria‘s season 3 on Monday, April 14. He recently wrapped production on the Amazon crime drama series Countdown

The actor previously teased his Euphoria character’s return in an interview with Variety after the show’s season 2 finale. In the episode, Dane’s Cal was taken into custody after his son Nate Jacobs — played by Jacob Elordi — turned him in to the police for his past crimes.

“There’s gonna be redemption,” Dane said at the time. “I mean, that’s the trajectory he’s on. I can’t imagine Cal’s life from solitary confinement. It’s tough to work Cal into the storyline when he’s behind bars.”

Domingo also teased the next season of Euphoria while speaking with PEOPLE at the 2025 NBCU Emmy Luncheon. “I’m looking forward to it coming back,” he said. “We’ve been working, and it’s been really wonderful. Everyone’s been very excited to be back.”

Euphoria seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Max.
