Cory Booker holds a marathon speech. Which other lawmakers have held talk-a-thons?

WASHINGTON – Sen. Cory Booker is still going strong.

The New Jersey Democrat has spent more than 20 hours railing against President Donald Trump and Republicans on the Senate floor, channeling Democratic frustrations over the current administration. A box of tissues and two glasses of water sit on his desk, among other items, as he continues his marathon speech.

The late South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond, a Democrat-turned-Republican, holds the Senate record for the longest known floor speech at 24 hours and 18 minutes for his filibuster against the 1957 Civil Rights Act, according to the Senate website

Booker could beat Thurmond’s record if he speaks past 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

But he’s also not the only lawmaker to hold such a lengthy speech. Here’s a short list of other talk-a-thons given by high-profile figures.

Rand Paul, 2013

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., held the Senate floor for nearly 13 hours to protest former President Barack Obama’s nominee to lead the Central Intelligence Agency, John Brennan, in 2013.

He also held the floor in 2015 for 10 hours and 30 minutes to speak out against National Security Agency surveillance programs authorized under the Patriot Act, according to CNN.

Ted Cruz, 2013

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz spoke for 21 hours and 19 minutes on the Senate floor in 2013 to protest the Affordable Care Act.

“I think I probably drank less than a glass of water all 21 hours. And that’s the only way you can make it without going to the bathroom,” Cruz told Fox News after his marathon speech.

He wore black tennis shoes for comfort.

“I will say standing here after 14 hours, standing on your feet, there’s sometimes some pain, sometimes some fatigue that is involved,” he said on the Senate floor. “But you know what? There’s far more pain involved in rolling over, far more pain in hiding in the shadows, far more pain in not standing for principle, not standing for the good, not standing for integrity.”

Nancy Pelosi, 2018

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., held the House floor for eight hours and seven minutes to pressure Republicans to allow a vote on legislation that would protect Dreamers, or undocumented youth brought to the U.S. as minors, according to the Associated Press.

“I don’t know when we would have another opportunity that matches today for us to just get a simple commitment from the speaker of the House that he would give us a vote,” she said at the time.

She was 77 then and wore four-inch heels during the speech.

Chris Murphy, 2016

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., spent nearly 15 hours on the Senate floor to talk about “the need to prevent gun violence,” according to his tweet. His remarks came after a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that same year.

“It doesn’t take courage to stand here on the floor of the United States Senate for two hours or six hours or 14 hours,” Murphy said. “It takes courage to look into the eye of a shooter and instead of running, wrapping your arms around a 6-year-old boy and accepting death.”

Kevin McCarthy, 2021

Then Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., spoke for eight hours and 32 minutes in 2021 on the House floor, according to the New York Times, beating Pelosi’s speech time by minutes.

“Personally, I didn’t think I could go this long,” McCarthy said towards the end of his speech. He was protesting the Democrats’ roughly $2 trillion package that included funding for social programs and to combat climate change.
