The second round of the 2025 NFL draft will start on Friday night, and there aren’t many people more upset to see Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders is still on the board than the young man himself. But his father and head coach Deion Sanders might be one of them. Cameras were rolling at their draft night party in hopes of documenting the moment when a team picked the younger Sanders, but that moment never came.
Instead, they caught reactions to the New Orleans Saints passing on him. The elder Sanders stood in the middle of the room, watching NFL commissioner Roger Goodell step to the podium to announce the pick. And when it was Kelvin Banks Jr. whose name Goodell read off the card, not Shedeur Sanders, all he could do was shake his head in disappointment. Sanders turned and beckoned to the DJ to restart the music.
He’s been busy this offseason trying to manifest a Sanders-to-New Orleans plotline that, at least yet, hasn’t come to fruition. Sanders repeatedly talked up the Saints as a potential team fit for his quarterback at Colorado’s pro day, and made it clear how eager he’d be to see his son stay in black and gold. But that didn’t happen with the ninth pick. Maybe it happens in Round 2 instead, but to this point most of the buzz about Sanders and New Orleans has not come from the Saints’ side of things.
