5:33PM Joe Root comes one and gives Sai Sudharsan an opportunity to make his maiden Test fifty with a half-volley outside off stump and he laces it through the covers for four. He uses the angle from round the wicket to cuff a slinger into the onside for a single. 

5:24PM Jadeja lets the last two balls of Woakes’ over go by.

This delay, for Rishabh Pant to be carted off, has not been too protracted …. unlike the numerous delays at Lord’s. Maybe Rod Tucker can be thanked for keeping the game going? 

5:23PM Ravindra Jadeja comes to the crease after wishing his team-mate well as they crossed. 

5:20PM Pant is going to have to retire hurt. He tries hopping off but the golf cart with ‘Ambulance’ stencilled on the windscreen, comes to the rescue.

5:19PM At the drinks break, Pant has his boot off and looks in real pain. There’s a chance he goes off here. Fingers at Lord’s, toes at Old Trafford for Rishabh… 

5:17PM England lose a review after sending a leg-before shout upstairs when Pant was hit on the toe while trying to reverse sweep his yorker. Woakes says he thinks there was a graze of the bat but the cordon thinks he didn’t hit it, Root the most vocal. Stokes asks for the review and there was a feather. Pant, now hobbled, calls on the physio so the umpires call on the drinks.

The blow has drawn blood. It hit him on the fifth metatarsal and his foot is swollen. He may not be able to continue. Is it broken? 

5:15PM Pant charges Dawson and thumps a drive in the same postcode as Stokes at mid-off. It wasn’t a chance but he didn’t move. Stuart Broad says that it’s very hard to pick out the ball at Old Trafford because of the amount of red paint around the ground, the Point, the media centre and the hotel as well as most of the advertising hoardings at that point. The ball goes for four. The ball earlier Pant had pulled Dawson through midwicket and Crawley also didn’t see it then rallied superbly to slide on his sode and claw it back from the rope, saving two. 

5:11PM At Taunton, or Ciderabad if you prefer, Jack Leach has taken six for 63 and Archie Vaughan, son of The Telegraph’s Michael, four for 85 to beat Durham in two days by five wickets.

Sudharsan is battings safely but taking India nowhere. If he survives to make a big score it will all make sense. But it seems as if he’s leaving runs out there. Two singles off the Woakes over. 

5:04PM Four singles off the Dawson over. He does come round the wicket to the left-handers, trying to drift it on to off and middle and turn it back in but both are adept at facing left-arm spin and work the ball with strong bottom hands into the legside gaps. 

5:02PM Maiden for Woakes to Sudharsan who, as Nasser Hussain says, has gone into his shell. It’s often a danger sign when you start patting back half-volleys, especially for IPL royalty. Playing within himself, curbing his instincts, can often lead to mistakes.
