WASHINGTON (TNND) — A Milwaukee County Circuit Judge was arrested by the FBI on Friday. Judge Hannah Dugan now faces federal charges, including obstruction, for allegedly helping an undocumented immigrant avoid being arrested last week.
The FBI is claiming that she obstructed the arrest of an immigrant who was in her courtroom,” said Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, an immigration attorney based out of Texas.
FBI Director Kash Patel writing on ‘X,’ “We believe Judge Dugan intentionally misdirected federal agents away from the subject to be arrested in her courthouse, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, allowing the subject — an illegal alien — to evade arrest.
“I think the charges are related to whether or not she actually helped this individual evade arrest by ICE agents,” said Erin Corcoran, an immigration law and policy expert at the University of Notre Dame.
According to court documents, witnesses recounted seeing Dugan direct Flores Ruiz and his attorney to leave through a jury door, evading arrest. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi told Fox News, this behavior will not be tolerated.
“If you are helping hide one, if you are giving a TDA member guns, anyone who is illegally in this country, we will come after you and we will prosecute you,” Bondi said.
But the Mayor of Milwaukee blasted the Trump administration for the arrest. Calling it “showboating.”
“They’re just trying to have this show of force and in the process of doing this, in a courthouse where people need to go for court proceedings, they’re scaring people away from participating in the process,” Mayor Cavalier Johnson told Fox News.
Federal authorities also arrested former New Mexico judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy, for allegedly housing a Venezuelan national with reported ties to Tren de Aragua. Lincoln-Goldfinch told us she believes the magnitude of these arrests is meant to put the judiciary and lawyers on notice.
“We are placing ourselves in the firing line if we are helping immigrants in any way, shape or form,” said Lincoln-Goldfinch.
Dugan is facing two charges for obstruction and concealing the individual from arrest. She already made an initial appearance in court and has since been released. Her next hearing is scheduled for May 15th.
