Former UFC fighter Ben Askren has been released from the hospital following a lengthy stay that included him receiving a double lung transplant.
Askren posted an emotional video, alongside his wife Amy, as the two were on their way home from the hospital earlier this week.
In the video, which was posted on Instagram, Askren discussed his “long journey” in the hospital and how he still has a long road ahead.
“What’s up, guys? Day 59, I’m out,” Ben Askren said. “Man, that was a long journey. And it’s not over, because I still can’t really walk. I’m going to re-teach myself to do that, among many other things.
“I guess I can make light of it because it was me, and I really don’t remember it. … I don’t remember 35 days of this journey. I think surgery was 24 or 25 days ago. It was hard. It was hard.”
Ben’s wife, Amy Askren, first shared in early June that Ben developed “severe pneumonia” and was “unable to respond to anything.”
Ben previously revealed that from May 28 through July 2 he has no recollection of what his body went through. He learned details of his own health struggles by reading his wife’s journal.
In the latest video, posted on Wednesday, Askren thanked everyone for the support he received as he was dealing with serious health issues.
“The support you guys gave me, whether it was sending a GoFundMe, whether it was helping my kids and wife get through it, I had friends come from all over the country to just hang out for a couple of days. It meant so much,“ an emotional Askren said. ”It was so great to have all the support and all the love.
“And hopefully I’m not in this situation again for a really, really, really long time. I plan on living a while. So thank you guys again, all of the positive support, all the comments online. Everything. It means so much. I love you guys.”
Askren lost about 50 pounds over approximately a 45-day period while battling pneumonia and receiving a double lung transplant.
He was put on a ventilator in June and spent nearly two months in the hospital.
Askren finished his MMA career with a 19-2 record, before retiring in 2019.
In addition to fighting in MMA, Askren won two NCAA championships as a wrestler at Missouri and was a part of the 2008 U.S. Olympics team. He is a member of the Missouri Hall of Fame and was a four-time All-American for the Tigers.
