Frank Luntz: Booker marathon speech ‘may have changed the course of political history’

Longtime GOP pollster Frank Luntz said Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) “may have changed the course of political history” with his marathon speech breaking the Senate’s record for the longest floor speech in its history.

“I want to emphasize what Cory Booker did over the last 24 hours may have changed the course of political history. I watched a lot of it. I listened to words. I listened to phrases,” Luntz said during a Tuesday evening appearance on NewsNation’s “On Balance.”

He confirmed that Booker’s unprecedented feat “struck a tone” with Americans in the midst of the Trump administration’s controversial policies.

“He struck the kind of tone that grassroots Democrats are looking for. He gave them a reason to fight. He gave them a reason to stand up and say, this is my country too,” Luntz told anchor Leland Vittert.

“Of course, every Republican watching will say, this is nonsense. But he is not speaking just to Republicans, he’s speaking to Americans, and what I saw over the last 25 hours absolutely blew me away,” he added.

The well known Republican pollster said the New Jersey senator’s speech will likely make him a contender for the 2028 presidential race.

“That speech puts Cory Booker as one of the leaders for the Democratic Party for 2028,” Luntz said.

“And I’ll go even further. If you ask Democratic senators right now, would they rather have lead them over the next three years, they would choose Cory Booker over Chuck Schumer. That’s how significant today was.”

Luntz’s comments come weeks after Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) faced an uproar from younger progressive party members who bashed him for helping Republicans pass a spending bill that prevented a government shutdown but included cuts to domestic discretionary spending.

Booker opposed the funding measure, saying it was a “surrendering of the powers of Congress to the president and Elon Musk.”

Despite their different views of the legislation, Schumer spoke out in support of his colleague for undertaking a 24 hour commitment on the Senate floor.

“I thank the gentleman for his fortitude and strength, and the crystalline brilliance by which he has shown the American people the huge dangers that face them with this Trump-DOGE-Musk administration,” Schumer said on the floor.
