Game 5 Preview: Tigers look to earn first series win at Mariners

The Detroit Tigers finally got in the win column on Monday night with a 9-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners in T-Mobile Park. The game began with a fantastic first inning as the good guys righted the ship and sailed off triumphantly.

Now, AJ Hinch’s squad looks to keep that success going on Tuesday night against that same Seattle team with Casey Mize toeing the rubber for his first appearance of the new season. Meanwhile, Logan Gilbert will take the bump for the M’s in his second start of the nascent campaign.

This matchup will likely be less favorable for the Tigers on Tuesday night, but rest assured, they are up for the challenge. Take a look below at how the two pitchers match up in Detroit’s fifth game so far.

GILBERT

Mize toes the rubber for the first time this season on Tuesday night, looking to continue his path back from reconstructive surgery. Armed with a seemingly rejuvenated split-finger offering along with another year of maturity, the Tigers are hoping their former top-overall draft pick can finally blossom this summer.

Gilbert is coming off a 2024 regular-season campaign that saw him lead the majors in games started (33), innings pitched (208 2⁄3) and WHIP (0.89), earning him an All-Star bid and sixth place in the American League Cy Young Award race. The 27-year-old’s 2025 debut was a beauty, allowing just one run on a solo shot and just one other hit over seven frames along with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
