GameStop closing more stores; see 23 Upstate NY locations already gone

GameStop is closing more stores this year, after already shutting down 23 locations in Upstate New York.

CNN reports the video game retailer plans to close “a significant number” of stores in the coming months, according to a regulatory filing Tuesday. A specific number and locations were not detailed, but the company closed about 1,000 locations globally over the past year.

Stores that have closed in recent months include Central New York locations in Camillus (near Fairmount Fair), Clay (Cor Center), Cortland, Oneida (Glenwood Shopping Plaza) and Oswego. It’s also game over at other Empire State shops in Albany, Buffalo, Kingston, Niagara Falls, Rochester, and Saratoga Springs.

GameStop had about 2,325 U.S. locations as of Feb. 1 and about 900 stores in other countries. That’s about half of its peak brick-and-mortar footprint of 6,000 worldwide locations a decade ago.

New York state locations that remain open include Destiny USA in Syracuse.

GameStop said Wednesday it plans to raise about $1.3 billion to invest in Bitcoin, shifting away from retail and towards cryptocurrency. According to Yahoo! Finance, share prices initially rose about 12% but then slid more than 8% in after-hours trading Wednesday.

GameStop is best known for selling both new and used video games, controllers, consoles and other electronics items. The company has struggled to compete with increased competition from online retailers and streaming gaming options, despite a recent effort converting some locations into “retro” stores last year to attract fans of older Nintendo, PlayStation, Sega Genesis and Xbox products.

Yahoo! Finance reports the company posted $1.28 billion in net sales for the most recent quarter, a 28% decline from the same period a year earlier. An analyst told CNN that the pivot to crypto is “really a defense against irrelevance.”

GameStop previously made headlines in 2020 when Reddit users pushed its value on the stock market up 1,500% within two weeks to $500 per share, as featured in the 2023 movie “Dumb Money.”
