Guardians score vs Yankees | Live game updates as Cleveland pursues three-game sweep of NY

CLEVELAND — The Guardians (14-9) host the New York Yankees (14-10) on Wednesday afternoon, April 23, at Progressive Field in a matchup of two of the top four teams in the American League.

The Guardians are atop the AL Central Division and tied for first in the AL with the Texas Rangers.

The Yankees are in first place in the AL East Division.

The Guardians enter the day with a five-game win streak, with a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park and wins over the Yankees on Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22. Cleveland beat New York 6-4 Monday and 3-2 Tuesday.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt calls on reliever Joey Cantillo and Ortiz exits with a line of 4⅓ innings pitched, eight strikeouts and four runs (all earned), five walks and five hits allowed. Ortiz threw a career-high 104 pitches.

Cantillo gets Austin Wells to strikeout, allows a double to Jasson Dominguez and gets Oswaldo Cabrera to strikeout to end the fifth inning.

Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodón put the Guardians down 1-2-3 in the fourth inning as he struck out Angel Martinez, Jhonkensy Noel and Austin Hedges.

Guardians starting pitcher Luis Ortiz gets through four innings. He struck out Ben Rice to lead off the fourth, walked Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger reached base on a fielder’s choice before striking out Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodón worked around a walk to José Ramírez to retire the Guardians in the third inning.

Guardians starting pitcher Luis Ortiz retires the bottom three batters in the Yankees lineup in order in the third inning. Gabriel Arias, Steven Kwan and Carlos Santana makes the plays defensively.

Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodón worked around a bunt single by Angel Martinez and a walk to Austin Hedges to retire the Guardians in the second inning.

Luis Ortiz is struggling as he walks Jasson Dominguez to lead off the second inning and allows an RBI single by Ben Rice after Oswaldo Cabrera popped out. Ortiz has allowed three hits, three walks and three runs in 1⅓ innings so far.

Aaron Judge follows Rice with another single. Ortiz gets Cody Bellinger to flyout, but Paul Goldschmidt hits an RBI single to score Rice and give New York a 4-1 lead.

Ortiz is now up to 60 pitches after Jazz Chisholm Jr. works a walk to load the bases. Ortiz has recorded only five outs.

Ortiz gets Anthony Vople to strikeout for the second time today. The inning is over.

Guardians score with hits by Gabriel Arias and José Ramírez to cut the Yankees lead to 2-1 in the first inning.

Arias hit a one-out double off Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodón. Ramirez followed with a single up the middle and Arias scored after Yankees center fielder Cody Bellinger made a fielding error.

The Yankees first four batters have reached base as Ben Rice walked, Judge hit a triple high off the center field fence that scored Rice and Bellinger walked.

Aaron Judge hits an RBI triple off the top of the center field fence to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead over the Guardians. Judge has reached base 21 games in a row.

Guardians starting pitcher Luis Ortiz walked Yankees lead-off hitter Ben Rice and then Judge showed off his power by just missing a home run. Judge’s triple would have been a home run in every other Major League Baseball stadium except for Progressive Field and Coors Field in Colordao.

Luis Ortiz is scheduled to start on the mound for the Guardians and Carlos Rodón is set to get the ball for the Yankees.
