‘Happy Gilmore 2’ and TGL hook up during ESPN telecast

PALM BEACH GARDENS — A short teaser trailer for “Happy Gilmore 2” was shown four times during Tuesday night’s TGL telecast on ESPN.

Before you ask why would Adam Sandler put on his Boston Bruins jersey and return to the golf course for this sequel, there was a reason the trailer ran during TGL’s semifinal playoff – several of the first-year league’s golfers are in the film.

Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele apparently have standout roles while Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa. have cameos. Non-TGL golfers with cameos in the film include Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Will Zalatoris, Jordan Spieth … and Jack Nicklaus.

Thomas’ Atlanta Drive defeated Bay Golf Club to advance to next week’s finals against New York. While he discussed the semfinal win, Thomas also was asked about his film role.

“It was very cool. I definitely realized very quickly how often I quote Adam Sandler movies in my everyday life,” Thomas said. “It was very, very cool. It was a learning experience and so much fun. One of the coolest experiences.”

The teaser trailer shows Thomas and McIlroy looking out of place on the film’s set. Thomas says, “I’m happy with how uncomfortable this feels right now.” McIlroy says, “We’re out of our element a little bit.”

Billy Horschel fist bumps Patrick Cantlay after his tee shot against Bay Golf Club in the TGL semifinal match at SoFi Center on March 18, 2025, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

In honor of the TGL-Gilmore connection, here are some props that appeared at SoFi Center Tuesday:

  • Happy’s car – the Duster – in the Plaza for fans to see entering the arena.
  • The Golden Busts, including Tiger Woods and Happy – these are exclusive to HG2, never before seen.
  • Happy’s Bruins jersey, Happy’s Timberlands and Happy’s original Hockey Stick putter.

The original “Happy Gilmore,” released in 1996, is considered a cult classic by many movie fans. The most memorable scene is when longtime “Price Is Right’ host Bob Barker, playing himself, corrects Gilmore when he refers to “Let’s Make A Deal” as “The Price is Wrong.” The two continue their confrontation and Barker eventually punches out Gilmore on the golf course.

“Happy Gilmore 2” – not yet rated – premieres on Netflix on July 25.
