Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy kicked things off in the 2025 Masters Tournament by shooting an even-par 72 Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club. Since then, the world No. 2 golfer has been on a tear.

McIlroy carded a 6-under in the second round Friday and continued that pace in Round 3 on Saturday. He became the first player in Masters history to start a round with six consecutive threes on his scorecard.

A bogey on the eighth and 10th holes brought him down to earth slightly, but he bounced back with a birdie and an eagle on the rest of the back nine. After 18 holes in Round 3, McIlroy had another 6-under to keep his lead entering Round 4.

McIlroy first competed at Augusta National in the 2009 Masters. He made the cut in his first try and ended tied for 20th. Despite multiple top-five finishes, though, McIlroy has never won a Masters.

His last major tournament win came in 2014, when he won the PGA Championship by one stroke over Phil Mickelson.

McIlroy sits in first at 12-under after three rounds at Augusta National. He holds a two-stroke lead over Bryson DeChambeau entering Sunday’s final round.

McIlroy came closest to a green jacket in 2022, when he finished second to Scottie Scheffler. That was primarily thanks to his stellar performance in Round 4 (8-under) to finish three strokes behind Scheffler.
