For the first time since Monday’s shooting at the NFL headquarters in New York City, which killed four people and injured a fifth, commissioner Roger Goodell spoke to NBC’s Mike Tirico about the tragedy. Goodell is not in Canton, Ohio, tonight for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game and is staying in New York. Goodell attended the funeral today for New York police officer Didarul Islam, one of the four people who died in the shooting.
“A tremendous loss,” Goodell said. “You see the officer’s family, young children. It’s something in the line of work for police officers, but it never makes it easy.”
The person who was injured in the shooting is an NFL employee and is in the hospital, stable and improving, according to Goodell.
“We’re optimistic about his recovery,” Goodell said.
Goodell was asked about the shooter focusing on the NFL when he entered the building.
“It’s a difficult thing when you’re dealing with a senseless act like this,” Goodell said on the league being a target. “There are no excuses for this senseless act. It’s hard for all of us to understand when it inflicts pain on those you know. These acts of senseless violence are happening in this country and around the world. It just shouldn’t be happening.
“It’s an attack on humanity. An attack on New York. An attack on our way of life.”
