A website called “Dogequest” allegedly published the personal information of Tesla owners across the U.S. in an apparent attempt to shame and intimidate them, amid tech billionaire Elon Musk’s growing interference in government.
Reports of Dogequest existence began circulating Monday. After causing an outcry and having Musk, Tesla CEO, accusing the website of terrorism, the site is no longer available as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Encouraging destruction of Teslas throughout the country is extreme domestic terrorism!!” Musk posted on X.
Nevertheless, the site remains a threat, although it has been down most of the day Wednesday.
The site featured an interactive map displaying Tesla owners’ names, addresses, phone numbers and, in some instances, links to their social media.
Dogequest said it will remove the personal details of Tesla drivers only if they can prove they have sold their vehicles.
It is unknown if all the names listed on the map are Tesla owners. In New Jersey, the site listed close to 50 alleged owners.
In recent weeks, many demonstrations branded as “Tesla Takedown” have taken place across the nation often resulting in vandalism of Tesla vehicles, charging stations, and dealerships.
Tesla’s stock price has dipped 33% in one month, and according to a report by iSeeCars, the price of Tesla’s used models is down 13.6% on average over the past year, making it the used car brand that has devaluated the most since last year.
What is doxxing?
Doxing or doxxing is the act of publishing private information about someone with malicious intent. This information can include things like full names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, workplace details, and other sensitive information.
Doxing is considered a form of cyberbullying and can lead to serious consequences, such as rendering the victim vulnerable to identity theft, threats and harassment.
The practice became more common with the advent of online forums, social media, and early internet communities where personal information could be shared rapidly and widely.
