Jets Sign QB Justin Fields

The Jets have made it official, announcing the signing of QB Justin Fields.

Fields, 26, tested free agency Monday and quickly reached an agreement on a new deal with the Green & White. Last season in Pittsburgh, Fields (6-3, 227) went 4-2 as a starter while totaling 10 TDs (5 pass/5 run) against just 2 turnovers. His 66% completion percentage and 93.9 passer rating were career highs.

At the NFL Combine, GM Darren Mougey said the Jets would “exhaust all options” at quarterback and Fields became the team’s focus once the NFL’s negotiating window opened Monday.

A first-round selection of the Bears (No. 11 overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields appeared in 40 games (38 starts) for the Bears over three seasons. Fields completed 60.3% of his passes in Chicago for 6,674 yards with 40 TDs and 30 INTs. He also averaged 740 yards on the ground per season and registered 14 rush TDs. In 2022, Fields rushed for 1,143 yards, which is the second-highest total for a QB in league history. His 2,562 pass yards in 2023 were a career high.

A dynamic dual threat, Fields’ 19 rush TDs and 2,509 rush yards are the third-most and fourth-most, respectively, by a QB since he entered the league. Over 50 career games, Fields has hit on 61.1% of his passes for 7,780 yards and totaled 64 TDs. He’s averaged 155.6 pass yards and 50.2 yards on the ground.

Fields, the third Ohio State QB in the common draft era to be selected in Round 1, will reunite with Jets star WR Garrett Wilson as the two played collegiately together with the Buckeyes in 2019-20. Chicago moved up nine spots in the 2021 NFL Draft to draft Fields after he posted a 20-2 mark as a starter in Columbus, completing 68.4% of his passes for 5,373 and 63 TDs and rushing for 867 yards and 15 TDs.

In addition to Fields, the Jets have veteran Tyrod Taylor and two young passers – Jordan Travis and Adrian Martinez – on the roster. The Green & White own the No. 7 overall selection in April’s Draft, three picks in the top 73 and eight selections in all.
