Jon Hamm On ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’ And Why He Is Back On TV In His First Series Starring Role Since ‘Mad Men’ – The Actor’s Side

Last season Jon Hamm received not just one but two Emmy nominations: Leading Role in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie as villainous Roy Tillman in Fargo and Supporting Actor in a Drama Series as the Musk-like tech giant Paul Marks in The Morning Show. Overall he has received a whopping 18 Emmy noms across drama, comedy and limited series since 2008, with a win in 2015 for his final season as Don Draper in Mad Men.

You now can expect Hamm to be a strong contender once again for his role as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a successful NYC hedge fund executive who gets fired, has a midlife crisis including a divorce and turns to robbing his very rich neighbors in Upstate New York in the new Apple TV+ series, Your Friends & Neighbors. This show represents Hamm’s first return to a regular starring role in a series since Mad Men which he did from 2007-15, and it already has been renewed for a second season even as it has just premiered its first season’s nine-episode run.

Hamm joins me this week for the Emmy season kickoff of my Deadline video series The Actor’s Side, where we talk about why he wanted to return to a regular series, just what made Coop such an intriguing character that he couldn’t resist and the comparisons to Don Draper as well as the clear differences. “Don Draper was selling the American Dream,” Hamm tells me. “Andrew Cooper was buying it.” That is, until it all comes crashing down for him and he starts stealing it.

We also talk about why television seems to be offering the juicier roles now and why he is drawn to it. We discuss the state of the movie industry and do a rundown of various roles he has done for the big screen from Top Gun: Maverick to his first film role in Clint Eastwood’s Space Cowboys (2000), where he had just one line and knew how to make it a memorable one.
