Josh Sweat will not be returning to the Eagles

Josh Sweat is leaving the Philadelphia Eagles in NFL free agency to sign a four-year, $76.4 million contract that includes $41 million guaranteed with the Arizona Cardinals, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Sweat is reunited with former Eagles defensive coordinator and current Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon in the desert.

This exit hardly comes as a surprise; no one was really expecting Sweat to be back in Philly next season.

OUTLOOK: Sweat is currently set to be a free agent when the new league year begins on March 12. The feeling here is that the relationship between him and the Eagles has been a divorce one year in the making. After taking a pay cut last offseason, I don’t think Sweat is very interested in giving the Eagles a hometown discount. The expectation here is that he’ll be looking to chase top dollar on the open market. Sweat has been a good player for the Eagles but he’s simply not someone they MUST keep when they have limited resources to work with.

The Eagles originally selected Sweat with a fourth-round pick (No. 130 overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was thought to be a ‘draft steal’ for them and he certainly outperformed expectations for a Day 3 pick. Sweat finishes his Eagles career with 48 sacks in 121 games played (including playoffs). He certainly ended his time with Philly on a high note by dominating in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX win, which caused him to earn some votes for the Super Bowl MVP award that ultimately went to Jalen Hurts instead.

Moving forward, the Eagles will need to add more help at edge rusher this offseason. Especially if Brandon Graham retires. The pass rushers currently in the plans for 2025 include Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, and Bryce Huff. Smith and Hunt are promising young players but Huff appears to be a free agent bust so far and it doesn’t seem like Vic Fangio is very keen on playing him.
