The road to the Kentucky Derby, the biggest race for 3-year-old thoroughbreds, starts right here in the Bluegrass.
Kentucky is not the “horse capital of the world” because the Kentucky Derby just happens to be here.
It’s the horse capital of the world because almost all the contenders for this signature American classic are born and bred in the commonwealth — most right around Lexington. In 2022, the year the 2025 contenders were born, 7,754 of the 18,700 North American foals were born in Kentucky, 41.5% of the total U.S. foal crop.
This year, all but two of the 20 horses scheduled to run in the Derby were born on Central Kentucky’s storied horse farms.
