The House voted 218 to 214 Thursday afternoon to pass President Trump’s sprawling domestic policy bill, which passed the Senate on Tuesday. The bill would extend and expand tax cuts and provide new funding for border security, immigration enforcement and the military. It would be partially paid for by cuts to Medicaid, food aid benefits, student aid and clean energy programs, but it would still add trillions to deficits over the next decade.
The House passed its own version of the legislation in May, but the Senate changed several critical provisions, and the House needs to approve that version before it goes to the president for his signature. Multiple House Republicans criticized the changes that were made in the Senate, particularly the additional amount it would add to the federal debt, but nearly all of them ultimately voted “yes.”
